Not long ago i witnessed life when people had less exposure of media.
They did not know about people who had big decorated houses and luxurious life style.
Life for them was eating healthy ,doing hard work and sleeping peacefully .
Socialization was basic way to share their thoughts and problems with each other.
Main purpose of socialization was to find out if some one might need their help.
They were happy and content with what they had. All they cared was basic needs of life FOOD , SHELTER AND health.
Unaware of word LUXURY life of people was mostly easy and simple which means HAPPY and PEACEFUL.
Either i lived such precious period of life when me and my family were truly actually happy with little amount of money brought home by father.
True peace and joy reflected through the faces of those people because they were content what life offered them for their honest struggles.
Then i remember cable t.v came in and revolutionize the whole scenario within some years.
People watched houses filled with luxurious stuff and people with designer clothes who drive expensive vehicles .
Then they looked at their own houses which had only basic necessary things, simple cheap clothes and life without car.
Inevitably inferiority complex swirled inside them. They thought they had been living a low and an incomplete life until now.
It seemed a huge and unforgivable mistake.
They wanted to correct it as soon as possible.
And for this they had to try hard to get enough money to make life same they saw others living.
Such restlessness caused stress and depression to people.
People started to do overtime to meet ends of their dreams.
Life was not peaceful and happy anymore no matter what they had achieved till this day.
Taking loans , doing corruption in work places, theft ,robbery and so many other crimes are gift that brought this LUST of LUXURY and NEED OF SHOW OFF along for people of today.
Your stomach can say no for more food once it is filled but LUST IS DISORDER OF WAY OF THINKING. HUNGER OF EYE. WHICH CANNOT BE SATISFIED EVER.
It IS SERIOUS DISEASE AND THERE IS NO CURE BECAUSE WE ARE AFRAID TO EVEN ACKNOWLEDGE THAT IT IS A DISEASE .
WE HAVE SUBMITTED OURSELVES TO THIS ADDICTION.
Addiction is WAY TO ESCAPE .
IT BRINGS SELF INDULGENCE.
IT KEEPS US LOST IN IT .
So we have found it PLEASURABLE which is dangerous for our mental and SPIRITUAL health .
I know that progress is good thing but MENTAL PROGRESS NOT MATERIAL ONE .
We waste our hard money on things that have no use in our life except they impress our guests that we had capability to have them.
Such show of satisfy our ego.
Instead of this if we spend this money to help someone who is hungry , homeless or education of poor child IT WILL GIVE US MORE valuable THING " PEACE OF MIND ".
Life is too short for stuff we gather . We living being are one family on this planet earth.
I think we should care for other family members too , who are less lucky .
Lord can give everyone equally as his treasures are for all ,like oxygen and water along with so many countless blessings.
He tests our faith and wisdom with his divers dispersal of resources ,no matter what reason make them reachable or unreachable for different people.
He makes it our duty to SHARE WHAT WE HAVE WITH NEEDY !
Nothing we can take along after death .
We can leave behind only our deeds and thoughts we cultivate in others heart for us.
Dearest Baili...such a profound and moving post, and so very true. There is so much of this going on in our society. It is everywhere you look. And that is really sad. Every word you have written here resounds in my Soul. How I have long yearned for life to return to an age when everything was so much simpler, when people meant more than possessions.
ReplyDeleteAnd I am concerned so much for our younger generation, for where all this social media one-upmanship is leading them to.
It is all so false, so destructive. In the UK, statistics state that at present 90% of children are suffering mental health problems...and most of this is caused by the pressures of social media.
I only hope and pray that humanity will wake up...before it is too late.

I agree with much of what you say, I do admit to enjoying a few luxuries, but not for the sake of showing off, just for the sake of nice things are nice. There is nothing wrong with enjoying the success won through hard work or even dumb luck, but there is a point where excess needs to be shared, as you say, peace of mind is the most important commodity.

ReplyDeleteThis reminds me of a friend's father. When he was young his family always made things for "poor children." They donated and fixed things and saved and put forth great effort to help the unfortunate. He felt like a king.
It was not until he was older that he realized he was considered a poor person but the local standards. He never knew it because they did so much for others.
It's all relative, isn't it? I think he was a king.

I think that it is all about balance. I think that some people are indeed corrupted by money and luxury. However, I think that one can live in material abundance and still maintain one’s values.

I so agree when you say "progress is good thing but MENTAL PROGRESS NOT MATERIAL ONE", baili. There are some people who are using their wealth for good (Bill and Melinda Gates, for example), but many others who are selfish and greedy. What a fine post this is, my friend.
