Hey beautiful souls!
Hope rising and shining everyday because of the Faith you have in Goodness.
Thank you so much for responding warmly on previous post. You guys are so generous and your support for me is incredibly strengthening.
One of my blogging friends Emma asked particularly if mustard oil massage is beneficial. This question stimulated some good memories actually and i wanted to share with you today . I don't knw about other houses or places but being from lower middle class family i observed that my mom would try her best to take advantage of natural resources available to support health of her family. We had no lotion at home so Mustard oil was frequently used instead .We would apply it on head and skin regularly specially after bath (once a week in winter twice in summer) and after washing face or hands daily before leaving for school .Mom would apply it on our head and then would make very tight braid and she would apply on it our faces as well but in lesser amount then she would apply on hair.
Like everything else mustard oil back then was on it's quite original course and smell great. The use of mustard oil would increase in winters when mom would ask us to sit in yard under sunlight we would feel annoy that now she will come with her irritating tools for ear cleaning ,nail cutting and mustard oil to massage our head. But i think massage was fun part at certain point honestly ,we would feel cozy and comfy and eyes would start to close as feeling sleepy. My mom was very hardworking woman and her hands were quite tough and this makes me say that she had most beautiful hands that ay not look perfect but the comfort and peace they delivered to her loved ones that was divine! I often imagine her hands in mine and feel the warmth and love she had shifted to her kids. God will love her for her deepest involvement in her family i believe!
After my marriage when i moved here in small city of southern Pakistan i saw mustard oil is popular here as well. I never saw my mother in law doing things that mom would do with us because the lotion was in house for winter dryness and her all kids were grownup too .
But i witnessed another interesting tradition here .When my eldest son born my mother in law would give him bath and then massage him with slightly warm mustard oil. But watching how intense was her way to do this was terrifying for new mom like me. I was far from healthy woman so my kids born skinny and hardly with accurate weight. Eldest son was tall but very skinny and was avid Cryer already. When mil would lay him on floor and massage him with all her power his whole body would get radish and his cries would get so loud and would make me cry as well. Mil would laugh at me that i was so stupid. But because my mom could understand she requested mil to take over and do it by herself . Honestly mom was not exception only little gentler . After massaging kids with mustard oil mom would give him bath and hand over to mil who would apply lotion on whole body including face and powder between legs ,under arms, Kohl in eyes .After all this makeup the child was wrapped in shawl tightly and laid down on bed for soem nice long sleep.
I was lucky to have mom and mother in law who could show how to look after babies. Mom was present for long period each time i gave birth to children and she would take all the responsibilities for one month completely or more sometimes.
This is sad things has been ups and down and grandparents are no longer needed for help in basic upbringing of children .Some years back grandparents would not just look after their grandchildren physically but would nurture their mental health by sharing their wisdom earned in long journey of life .Apart from difference in human nature overall it was beauty of life that made life better and less stressed back then i think.

Baili those home remedies are so wonderful...I think much better than modern medications at times. Lovely story about your mom and mother-in-law. Hope you continue to have power. Hugs!
ReplyDeletethanks dear Debbie for lovely words always!
Deletei agree that home remedies hardly have any side effect as compare to modern medication .i grew u seeing mom relaying on different herbs that she would pick from fields and hills far or near and she would make healthy remedies for her personal treatment and share to close friends sometimes . She had to go through though modern medication for sever health issues but it they were last two decades of her life when specially last one when she got mentally disturbed because of some domestic problems . as i am growing old i feel so happy that mom stayed with us for long and saw her grandchildren .we got some fair time to create good memories ,if there were some bad i still am blessed to focus on good ones always
Grandmas are great storehouses of knowledge about many things!
ReplyDeletei think could spend with my maternal grandma little more than a decade dear Debra and i am sure times i was able to be with her made quite difference for me as little girl .i am thankful it was so
DeleteYour memories of your mom always make me smile, Baili. A good mother is one of the greatest blessings in this world! I was so blessed as well!
ReplyDeleteyour words made my eyes teary with gratefulness dear Marie !
Deletei true that if life is building ,mother plays roll of a foundation and strong foundation provides strong background for better humans no doubt .
i am happy you had a loving and kind mother as well who could guide you and strengthen you for future :)you are beautiful person i see
Grandparents are one more supportive person to newborns and children as they grow up. It's too bad that some of hem are rough with newborns.
ReplyDeletei totally agree dear Red
Deletewe all differ in nature as humans ,most of us live happily with our flaws without paying much attention to notice them leave the fixing at side .but we see that people with good nature become good on all levels in life and relationships and so are the grandmas .
so true that in olden time grandparents were strong pillar for their gown children and great support to participate in healthy upbringing of their grandkids
Thanks for sharing on mustard oil.
ReplyDeletethanks for likening
DeleteThank you for answering my question. I did go and read about mustard oil. Very interesting. Your sons' grandmothers must have known what they were doing. Look at how healthy and handsome they all are.
ReplyDeleteheartfelt thanks for being sweet dear Emma .your question made me indulged in nostalgia and share with you all :)
Deletei was fortunate to have support from my mom and mother in law when my kids came to world .i would admire my mother in law more because she hardly was good to me back then ,even terrible but she tried to behave nice as grandma for while when it was needed by the grace of God
I have used home herbal remedies to heal my foot and even though it may take a bit longer it works. I have wonderful memories of my mom too. I so wish she was still here. I miss her everyday. OMGosh, the mustard oil sounds like something I must have on hand. Thank you for sharing that. Many blessings to you.
ReplyDeleteyou definitely are very wise lady dear Nichole !
Deletei am amazed how you manage to do so many tasks on same time ,it is indeed because you have brilliant mind nurtured by a strong and wise mother :)
i know home remedies take longer but they work for sure and with no harmful side effect at all .
i can relate that no matter how old we grow there is always longing to have our mothers with us , i think it happens to most of daughters more than sons :)
even though she is no longer with you physically her love and wisdom is treasured within you forever and one can see how beautifully you bring and share with world :) hugs and blessings to you too my friend!
Gosh... I've never heard of mustard oil being used that way. I wish I could have my grandchildren close by, but they all live so far.
ReplyDeletekind friend Kay heartfelt thanks for visit and sweet comment!
Deletei am little surprised to hear that you too are not familiar with such tradition .it must have been very older than we think i believe so modern age people have no clue about it .
we have such customs in rural areas and in abundance though with little variation because of geographical or cultural difference . older women take great interest in shaping the life of their grand children and shift their wisdom to next generation and i see mostly good in it .most impressive among these is the self confidence and harmony that child adopts through it and lives healthier life physically and mentally
i hope you and your children are able to visit each other once in a while and on festivals like Christmas
Thank you for sharing the story about your mom and mother-in-law, and the mustard oil.
ReplyDeleteI do hope you continue to have power.
Take care, my good wishes.
All the best Jan
thank you dear Jan !
Deletewe had power yesterday and today as well though it went away for two hours but came back and i am able to respond via laptop rather than phone which is tiring
best wishes
Never heard of it before, I confess.
ReplyDeleteLet me explore.
times have changed and new generations hardly know how treasured were older times because of shared wisdom by their ancestors :)
DeleteInteresting. I always thought that mustard oil had a very obvious odor.
ReplyDeletedear Kathy thanks for kind visit and comment
Deletemustard oil was used in cooking as well , i remember that the Ghee gained form milk was used in cooking mostly and mustard oil was used as second and cheaper option . specially fritter and samosas were deep fried in mustard oil as Ghee was expensive ,back then mustard oil had lot better odor because of purity
Sound interesting this mustard oil, will go to link and read.
ReplyDeleteFond memories for you there Baili. Gosh no power for a week - that's a long time escecially is you have a freezer full of frozen food, it all would be no good.
Take care.
thanks dear Margaret !
Deleteactually our power pools in street were all messed up and the employers of WAPDA were fixing the issue by distributing the load by placing one more pool in the colony . so power was gone for whole day and sometimes it would appear only for while only when they were checking the lines probably .
take care friend!
Wonderful to read about your customs and traditions and of course the upbringing with your two sons with the relatives to help. Wonderful memories! Oh, it's cold here in the heartland. Snow has finally fallen which is leading to more snow. And my arms hurt from shoveling snow. All the best to a warm and cozy winter!
ReplyDeletedear Ellie thanks for likening !
Deletethis is true that modern time people don't care for old customs and family values specially but our learnings reveal that ancient wisdom that transferred from old to new generation is not bundle of useless ideas but treasure that matches with new scientific researches as well and applying it on daily living bring much goodness in our life .
i hope your cold weather takes break soon and some nice gentle weather appears to cheer you up :)
best wishes for you as well my friend
Baby massage groups/classes became a thing in the last decade for trendy new mums and popped up in every town, yet clearly it's not new at all in Pakistan! I had no mother or mil help with my children but I had a great aunt who was a midwife all her life, no children of her own but about 50 years of working in hospitals delivering new babies - she received a medal from the queen many years ago for her dedication to her job (along with others), she lived 100 or more miles away so didn't visit but my babies cried a lot so she made tiny little vests and socks of very soft natural lambswool for them instead of the modern, cotton all-in-ones my friends had; thery looked so old fashioned and I was uncertain they were a good idea but and as soon as they were worn, they stopped crying and slept beautifully, I followed all her advice by writing letters to each other... letter writing isn't something people bother with so much now but we didn't have the social media back then. She encouraged me to put baby lotion massage on the babies heads to prevent cradle cap (dry skin) and to help the top of the skull to form and close as explained there is a space where the bone has to close, there under the skin when they are born. She also taught me to put cabbage leaves in my bra when I got breast mastitis (it works and doctors suggest it sometimes too) and also chocolate cocoa powder in bottle milk to supplement a very hungry breast fed baby not yet ready to wean. I weaned mine early on her advice and they thrived. I hope one day to be a grandmother and will be happy to help and be involved. I think using mustard oil must be a very good natural thing to use and we now know that massage is good for babies. Betty
ReplyDeleteoh thank you sooo much for beautiful and detailed comment dear Betty !!!!!!!!!!
Deleteyou warmed my heart with your sharing my friend !
nature is amazingly kind when we long for something unknowingly or unknowingly Nature send it on our way somehow miraculously :)
you found your aunt so kind who recommended you things and gave ideas how you could help your babies to feel better wow this is really Grace of God around and within us no doubt!
your aunt sound really wise that she knew how to make child skull accurate . the idea of massage here is too for placing and firming the skull of baby but back then i hardly knew any thing like this so all i could be was upset foolishly.
i was sick enough that i could not fed any of my baby unfortunately. my children suffered because of this a lot till they got three years or so ,their stomach was troubled mostly until they were 3 because buffalo milk was hard to digest and goat milk which was healthiest but rarest .
even though it was not my fault i could not feed my children there remained a silent guilt inside the corner of my heart Betty .
massage centers ,yes our big cities have them but only rich people visit them because they are expensive for common people nor it is acceptable (morality issues)for middle or lower middle classes
p.s. it must be difficult to be without power for a whole week. Do people in your area have solar power? It is expensive here to install but some people have panels on their roof.
ReplyDeletereally sorry for late response dear Betty !
Deletei had guests and guess what power was with us all the time meanwhile ,they left yesterday and power is playing on and off once again .
oh yes solar system is extending here slowly .people with more resources have full solar system installed that take load of whole domestic appliances including air conditioning system though it is too expensive . we have solar battery that run fans and lights for us and that is it .our converter has been out of order and repairing is went invain as well . we are thinking about to have new one soon . because of converter down tv and laptop are not able to work while power is gone .
yes very expensive ,specially in last two years it is beyond reach of common man actually
I like the way that extended families used to help each other out and share their wisdom. It rairly happens these days when youngsters go off to lead their own lives without support.
ReplyDeletei feel blessed i could witnessed those happy and positive times dear Cheri when family members were close to each other and grandmas were great support for family .most of children were growing under their warmth and shade .i miss such warmth now . it is really sad and hard to see how family is getting away from each other and growing kids refuse to listen anything from their elders let alone the grandparents
ReplyDeleteAlways wonderful to read your experiences and thoughts
ReplyDeleteHello dear Baili, thank you for sharing these wonderful traditions and memories. You put a picture in my mind of your mother, and it was very heartwarming. It is always very interesting to learn about other parts of the world, customs and cultures. I like to travel when reading your words. I wish you and those you love the happiest of New Year's with many blessings along the way.
ReplyDeleteOs remédios caseiros nas mãos das mães fazem autênticos milagres. Foi um gosto lê-la.
ReplyDeleteUma boa semana.
Um beijo.
Great info and interesting post. Success for your blog ok
ReplyDeleteHello Baili,
ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing this story and your memories. The mustard oil massage sounds interesting. Take care, enjoy your day and the week ahead.
This is a great story about a part of your Life and the traditions of your country and área.
ReplyDeleteHave a great Year 2024 for you with all your lovely family. A Year full of LOVE, happiness, good health, Joy, and the best good things of Life.
Hello Baili
ReplyDeleteI remember my mother using mustard cataplasm when I had a cold and was coughing it was said to be good for pulmonary problems.
Thank you for your prayers.
The mustard oil rub sounds too ferocious for a baby! 😕
ReplyDeleteThat said, what a blessing to have the grandparents and their wisdom around.
If I remember correctly dear Sandi I have responded to you but if not I am sorry my friend!
DeleteIndeed it is an effective way to strengthen bones of newly born.
I agree that having grandmas around is quite reliving for parents specially a mom who are weak already after bringing child to the world.
I am sure grandmas knowledge about baby's health was no way less than any letest scientific research back then
"God will love her for her deepest involvement in her family i believe!" God will love you for your dedication as a mother, too, Baili. I have no doubt about that! How lovely that you have such wonderful memories of your mother and m-i-l. New babies are scary for new moms, so it helps to have the knowledge of experienced moms to guide them through the first weeks.
